Homegrown power

Why harness the power of offshore wind energy?

Offshore wind energy provides a cleaner, renewable source of power that significantly reduces carbon emissions. By investing in this technology, we can create jobs and foster sustainable communities.

Improve air and water quality where we live

Wind power minimizes harmful energy production methods and decreases pollution, leading to cleaner air and healthier water for communities.

Create sustainable jobs for New Englanders

Investing in offshore wind creates good, local jobs in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.

Help address climate changes that fuel extreme weather

Using local wind resources helps cut down on our reliance on fossil fuels and plays a part in fighting the pollution causing our planet to overheat.

Debunking myths about offshore wind energy

As wind energy grows, some groups tied to fossil fuels are putting out messages that make it seem less reliable or more risky than it is. That’s why it’s important to look at the facts when we think about offshore wind power and what it could mean for our energy future.

MYTH: Offshore wind harms marine life, especially whales

Fact: Federal agencies confirm there is no scientific link between offshore wind development and whale strandings or deaths.

This is according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Marine Mammal Commission, and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). Experts have been studying an increase in whale deaths since 2016, before the offshore wind industry started working off the Atlantic coast.

MYTH: Offshore wind negatively impacts fishing industries

Fact: Offshore wind and fishing can coexist.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management are working together on turbine spacing and layout to ensure commercial and recreational fishing, boating, and tourism can continue and thrive alongside wind power.

MYTH: Offshore wind ruins coastal tourism and damages property values

Fact: Offshore wind farms are unlikely to damage coastal economies, and they have little to no impact on tourism.

Offshore turbines are placed far enough from shore that they do not obstruct beachside views or detract from the coastal experience. Studies indicate that most tourists visiting coastal areas are drawn by the beach itself, not the distant horizon. In fact, some wind farms attract visitors interested in renewable energy, offering potential for environmental tourism and sustainability tours.

MYTH: Offshore wind is not a reliable source of energy

Fact: Offshore wind is actually a highly reliable and consistent energy source, with wind speeds tending to be steadier and stronger out at sea than on land.

Wind energy is a reliable and increasingly essential part of modern energy systems. Advances in technology, grid integration, and complementary energy sources have made wind energy a reliable contributor to the power grid.

How to take action

Offshore wind energy captures the natural power of ocean winds to generate clean, renewable electricity. This innovative solution not only reduces our reliance on fossil fuels but also creates jobs and supports local economies.

Pledge your support

Offshore wind is clean, reliable, and affordable. It's critical to ending our reliance on the fuels causing our planet to overheat. By harnessing the power of the ocean, we can create jobs and promote sustainable growth.

Spread the word

Big Oil spreads misinformation to protect their profits, but the truth is clear: wind energy is safe and effective. Join us in setting the record straight and advocating for a sustainable future.

Donate to our work

Your support helps us advocate for clean, homegrown energy that strengthens New England’s economy, protects our environment, and reduces our reliance on fossil fuels. By standing with offshore wind, you’re helping to build a more sustainable future powered by the strength and resilience of our coastal communities.

At this point, there is no scientific evidence that noise resulting from offshore wind site characterization surveys could potentially cause whale deaths. There are no known links between large whale deaths and ongoing offshore wind activities.
